Carrier Appetite
An insurer's current willingness to write new business for a given peril, geography, and property type — appetite shifts far faster than most people expect.
Carrier appetite describes what an insurer is currently willing to underwrite: which states, which perils, which construction types, which price bands. Appetite is a live business decision, not a fixed fact about a company — the same carrier can be aggressively writing in one county and flatly declining the next one over, and both can flip within a single underwriting cycle.
Why it matters
- Appetite changes faster than most public reporting reflects it — a carrier that was writing new business six months ago may not be today, on the same property.
- "This carrier writes in my state" and "this carrier will write this specific property" are different questions; appetite is peril- and geography-specific, not just state-specific.
- A market in "crisis" condition for one peril (say, coastal wind) can still have healthy appetite for an inland property a few miles away.
How CoverGuard uses this
CoverGuard models carrier writing status per property from public filings, contracted feeds, and a heuristic that's clearly labeled when it's modeled rather than a confirmed, sourced signal.

Non-Renewal
A carrier's decision not to renew a policy at its next term — distinct from a cancellation, and the leading edge of a market pulling back from a geography.
